  • During the Golden Age of Dutch art and science, Frederic Ruysch was the most celebrated of the Dutch anatomists. He is immortalized in John Neck’s painting of 1683, one of the finest made of a dissecting scene. His anatomical museum was at the time a major attraction for foreign visitors in Amsterdam. This fabulous museum was described in his book in ten parts richly illustrated with fine copperplates, among them the famous scenes of fetal skeletons placed in a rock arrangement consisting of bladder stones, vascular trees and bushes of varnished nerves and blood vessels.
