Woman giving birth

  • Nouvelles démonstrations d´accouchemens -
  • Author: MAYGRIER, Jacques Pierre (1771-1835)
  • Among the 80 superb and instructive plates of the female pelvis, the foetus, caesarian section, forceps delivery, etc, there is one certain plate that has made Maygrier’s atlas renowned until our days. It shows a young woman gracefully dressed in the Parisian fashion of the period, leaning against a piece of furniture with her thighs separated. The physician in a cut away coat, is placed in front of her with his left knee on the ground, the other raised to support the elbow. He passes his right hand under the skirt, the index finger having been previously anointed with oil or mucilage.
