This comprehensive German work on pharmaceutical plants, illustrated with 615 hand-coloured engraved plates, is an enlarged version of Mrs. Elisabeth Blackwell’s A Curious Herbal, originally published in London, 1737-39. This German version was published on the initiative of the distinguished physician Christoph Jacob Trew, under whose patronage so many talented artists, engravers and printers produced some of the finest natural history books ever published in Germany. By giving support, scientific instructions and financial aid to a fine team of local artists and engravers, he made Nuremberg one of the most important centers of botanical art.
